Canon EOS M100 mirrorless camera introduced. Canon EOS M100 Official Announcement

Publication date: 24.11.2017

Introduction to the camera

In the line of mirrorless cameras from Canon, the next update is the Canon EOS M100, a compact and affordable model. It is designed for amateur shooting in automatic mode, but it also has all the usual manual settings. The novelty is intended for amateur and novice photographers who are looking for a light, compact and inexpensive camera for every day to get beautiful, lively, life-like shots. It will also come in handy for professionals who need a camera "on hand" for everyday shooting.

For mirrorless Canon cameras EOS M has created its own line of interchangeable lenses with the EF-M mount. Basically, these are very compact and affordable models that are convenient to carry and use in everyday shooting.

Thanks to the Canon EF-EOS M adapter, you can install any optics from Canon EOS DSLRs on the camera without any restrictions - everything works the same as on SLR cameras, with full functionality.

Canon EOS M100 is a very compact model. With a weight of 302 grams and dimensions of 67.1 x 108.2 x 35.1 mm, this camera can be carried in a jacket pocket with a small lens, such as the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM (with the device comes with it as a Kit) or a very flat Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM.

The new camera has replaced the Canon EOS M10. What changed? First of all, the novelty received a modern image sensor with 24.2 million effective pixels. This promises improved detail and image quality in low light conditions. The new sensor is assisted by the DIGIC 7 processor, which provides higher performance of the device and the quality of photos and videos.

The Canon EOS M100 is equipped with Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, so focusing promises to be fast and accurate in both stills and video. But when recording video - also smooth.

Among the improved performance - continuous shooting at 6.1 frames per second (against 4.6 frames / s for its predecessor). The camera allows you to capture the right moment, even if the subject is in motion.

An important advantage of the Canon EOS M100 is the availability of wide wireless capabilities, which will be discussed in more detail below.

The novelty is equipped with a tilting display that can be rotated 180 ° in a position for taking selfies.

But taking pictures of something in front of you, holding the device above your head, will be inconvenient - due to its design, the display does not tilt down. But at the disposal of the photographer spectacular angles from the bottom point.

Display - touch. And it's convenient: you can focus in the right place of the frame with one touch of the screen, just like it is done on smartphones. However, the touch screen in the case of the EOS M100 is not just an additional feature, but an important feature. After all, there are not so many physical controls - buttons and disks - on the case, and most of the parameters are configured through the touch interface.

In terms of the number and arrangement of controls, the Canon EOS M100 is more like a compact camera. On the back panel, next to the display, there is a familiar navipad and three additional buttons, which even a beginner will not get confused.

On the top panel there is a power button combined with a lever for selecting the camera operation mode: intelligent automatic "green", creative and video shooting mode. There is also a shutter button together with a control wheel. In most modes, it is responsible for entering exposure compensation, and in priority modes, for the appropriate setting. Nearby is a separate button for recording video.

The built-in flash is also located on the top panel.

On the left side of the camera is a compartment for SD memory cards; All standards are supported up to UHS-I.

A little higher are the HDMI output (type D) and the micro-USB port required for wired connection of the camera to a computer. Please note that the Canon EOS M100 does not support USB charging. This means that the battery will have to be charged in the usual way - in a special charger.

The EOS M100 uses the LP-E12 battery. According to the manufacturer, about 295 shots can be taken on one charge. But these are rather “pessimistic” data - we managed to make more than 500 frames at a time. Although a lot will depend on the style and conditions of shooting. By the way, to increase battery life, the camera has a special eco-mode, using which (according to official data) it will be possible to take more than 410 frames.

Canon introduced the EOS M100, a compact and stylish mirrorless camera that captures exceptional quality photos and instantly shares them online or with other devices. EOS M100 is convenient to carry with you to always be able to capture the bright and unique moments that every day is so rich in. A set of artistic filters and support for wireless data transmission will allow you to take amazing photos and immediately share them with your friends online.

The EOS M100 is the ideal choice for those who have long dreamed of fully realizing their creative vision and reaching new heights of photographic excellence. Learning how to use this camera is a breeze: its touch interface is as convenient as that of a smartphone, and a set of built-in filters makes it easy to add expressiveness and completeness to a picture. Tips displayed directly on the display will help you master the functions of the camera: you do not have to scroll through the instructions for a long time if you want to blur the background or brighten the subject in the picture.

If you're a vlogger or just like to take pictures in interesting places, you'll appreciate the handy tilt screen and selfie mode. And to give your photo portraits a professional finish, use the five-gradation Skin Smoothing mode, which evens out complexion and hides imperfections.

Big features in a compact format

Despite its modest size, the EOS M100 uses the latest technology, which you would rather expect from expensive professional equipment. It turns on instantly, so you won't miss a good plot. The image quality is also excellent: even when shooting in bright sunlight or in low light, the shots are incredibly clear and rich. The video will also be crystal clear, and it will not require any additional effort from you.

Ease of use

Simple and clear prompts displayed directly on the display will help you quickly master the various shooting modes and camera settings. Control via the touch screen is reminiscent of working with a smartphone interface and is also mastered intuitively: when viewing photos, you can scroll through, zoom in and out with familiar gestures.

Stylish design

Whatever your style, the EOS M100 is the perfect companion: it comes in three colors – black, white and silver – and is complemented by nine color overlays ranging from bright teal to stark black. You can attach a strap to the camera so you can wear it around your shoulder or around your neck, so you always have it handy and you don't drop it. The straps are also available in a variety of colours: let your imagination run wild and mix and match to your heart's content.

Wireless connection

The EOS M100 supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth data transfer, making it easy to send photos to social networks such as Instagram and Facebook. You don't even need to touch the camera to transfer photos to your iOS or Android smartphone1 using the Canon Camera Connect app. By simply connecting via Wi-Fi, you can send photos and videos from the camera to the same cloud storage where all other images from your smartphone are stored.

Interchangeable lenses

Are you shooting portraits today and landscapes tomorrow? The EOS M100 allows you to change lenses depending on your shooting needs. The EF-M series lenses are light and compact, just like the camera itself - you can take them with you on your next photo walk without hesitation. And as your skill and technical requirements grow, the EOS M100 will accept any lens from model range EF or EF-S.

Drawing up a review Konstantin Birzhakov, August 29, 2017
According to the official website of Canon
The author of the review cannot be held responsible for the accuracy of information taken from open sources.

The other day, Canon introduced a significant upgrade from its predecessor, the EOS M10, to its entry-level mirrorless camera, the EOS M100.

The novelty is built on the basis of a modern bundle of a well-proven 24.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor and a DIGIC 7 processor. Accordingly, it is easy to guess that one of the main "chips" of the new camera is support for Dual Pixel CMOS AF hybrid autofocus technology.

The new processor in the M100 made it possible to significantly increase the speed of continuous shooting - 6.1 fps with focusing on the first frame and 4 fps with tracking autofocus, which looks more than enough for an entry-level and even amateur camera.
Video recording is possible with Full HD resolution, progressive scan and a frequency of 60 fps.
The design of the EOS M100 is made in a minimalist style.

Mechanical controls - a necessary minimum. Obviously, the main bet is on control using the touch screen. It is worth noting here that the touch interface of Canon cameras has been worked out almost at an exemplary level, so the user of the new camera will not have problems with controlling shooting parameters. However, for beginners, the already excellent interface has been supplemented with a new simplified mode.

The touch display can be rotated 180 degrees relative to the top of the case, making it possible to take selfies with maximum convenience.

A full set of modern wireless interfaces (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC) is useful both for transferring images and for remote control of shooting.
The built-in flash extends out of the camera body a considerable distance from the optical axis and, apparently, can be deflected manually to reflect its light, for example, from the ceiling.

Fans of creative experiments will certainly benefit from the Canon EOS M100's ability to shoot high dynamic range (HDR) photos by combining a series of sequential shots taken with exposure bracketing, as well as the ability to creatively process RAW photos right in the camera.
To date EOS-M system has 7 lenses that cover all the basic needs of the photographer. Standard, macro, wide-angle, fast-aperture and telephoto lenses are available. However, the standard zoom EF-M 15-45 mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM is inferior to most of its competitors in aperture ratio at a maximum focal length of 72 equiv. mm.

The novelty will go on sale in October 2017.

The specification of the Canon EOS M100 painfully resembles that of the Sony a5100, released back in 2014 and still on sale. From the novelty, we can expect somewhat more stable autofocus and the availability of optics through the use of EF S lenses via the EF EOS M adapter.

The Canon EOS M100 is a simplified, high-resolution camera for novice photographers who want to move from smartphone to cameras without diving headlong into all the kits and controls.

Canon offers a new option for aspiring photography enthusiasts who want to step out of the shadow of smartphones and into the world of cameras. Announced on August 29, the Canon EOS M100 is an entry level camera packed inside the smallest body of the M series.

The 24-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor inside the M100 is designed to enhance the smartphone experience, while the redesigned touch interface makes the transition easier for smartphone enthusiasts. This, according to Canon, makes it easier to switch modes, for example, if you need to change settings or adjust the focus. The tilting screen rotates 180 degrees, offering the ability to shoot at awkward angles or take selfies.

The APS-C sensor is paired with a Canon Digic 7 processor and bursts at 4 frames per second (fps) or 6.1 frames per second with focus set to the first frame. EOS M100 Brings Canon Dual-Pixel Autofocus to Mirrorless entry level, for smoother and faster autofocus, with the latest DSLRs.

Usage and features

The camera doesn't offer 4K, which isn't surprising for a budget model, but 1080p video can still deliver 60fps. The Canon EOS M100 also includes a range of shooting options for beginners. The Creative Assist menu allows users to perform tasks such as blurring backgrounds or brightening an image without knowing the technical terms for aperture and exposure. Canon says the feature is designed to help beginners learn how to further improve their photography skills. The camera also includes an HDR backlight control mode, creative filters, self-portrait mode, and exposure.

From connectivity, the M100 features Bluetooth, which always maintains a paired connection between the camera and phone, for geotagging and wireless transmission. When controlled remotely, RAW photos and videos still require a stronger Wi-Fi connection.

The M100 will replace the Canon EOS M10 from 2015, with a similar design and price. Unlike the more expensive M5, the M100 does not have an electronic viewfinder (EVF) and offers about half the speed. However, the EOS M100 is the smallest camera in the M-series and features the same sensor as the M5.

Price and availability

The Canon EOS M100 will go on sale in October for $600 ($36,000) with the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens or $950 ($57,000) for the Dual Lens Kit, which also includes includes an EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.

The no-lens option doesn't exist, as it's meant for mirrorless beginners who most likely don't own lenses.

Canon has unveiled the EOS M100 mirrorless camera. According to the manufacturer, the miniature and easy-to-use camera is a good choice for those who would like to go up a notch compared to smartphone cameras. The advantages of the EOS M100 include the ability to change the lens and the availability of zoom lenses.

The camera is equipped with a 24.2 MP APS-C CMOS image sensor and a Canon DIGIC 7 processor, which allows you to take pictures of a quality that is not possible with smartphone cameras with their tiny sensors. This also applies to the detail of images, including those taken with telephoto lenses, and the low level of noise in images taken with minimal lighting. The sensitivity range is ISO 100-25600.

The Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus system provides high speed focus. The continuous shooting speed is 4 fps (6.1 fps if the focus is locked). Full HD video shooting at 60 fps and interval shooting are provided.

The EOS M100 features a built-in flash with a guide number of 5.0 and a 3-inch touch screen that tilts up to 180°.

The EOS M100 supports Wi-Fi 802.11n, NFC, and Bluetooth, allowing you to instantly share photos or use your mobile device as a monitor and control the camera. When connected via Bluetooth to a smartphone, the camera can add location coordinates to pictures. SD, SDHC and SDXC cards are used as removable media (there is support for UHS-I).

With dimensions of 108 x 67 x 35 mm, the camera with the LP-E12 battery, which can take 295 shots per charge, weighs 302 g.

The camera is designed for EF-M lenses. EF and EF-S lenses can be mounted to it using the EF-EOS M Mount Adapter, sold separately.

The black and white versions of the Canon EOS M100 are set to go on sale in October for $600 with the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens. A kit with EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM and EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lenses will cost $950. The Canon EOS EF-M Mount Adapter mentioned above is already on sale. It costs $200.
