Down with the mirror! Review of the Canon EOS M system camera. Review and testing of the Canon EOS M10 compact digital camera Development of the Canon EOS M system

Canon is the world leader in the photo and video market. Almost a century of history of the company often becomes a decisive factor when choosing a camera. The Canon logo is found on budget compact digital cameras and professional DSLRs. But it is important to consider that the company has taken up the production of "soap dishes" relatively recently, therefore it does not have such advantages over competitors as in the production of SLR cameras. Canon is taking its first steps towards mirrorless technology, but it is still a long way from market leaders.

The company's forte is SLR cameras. Fans of the brand note the intuitive menu and pleasant color reproduction in warm colors. It is said that the world of photographers is divided into "canonists" and "nikonists", but this is due more to force of habit than significant differences. Under any brand, more or less successful models can be hidden. In order not to make a mistake with the choice, read reviews of the best cameras.

Best Canon Compact (Digital) Cameras

Compact cameras are the most inexpensive and mobile representatives of Canon photographic equipment. Smaller and lighter than mirror models, they are great for travel and family photo albums. The weight of most of them ranges from 400 to 600 grams. At the same time, the case of digital devices is devoid of fragile protruding parts, which makes it easy to transport them in a bag or suitcase.

Despite their small size and relatively low cost, these Canon developments are as good as some beginner DSLRs in terms of image quality. After all, the best representatives of the category are equipped with a decent matrix with a sufficiently large number of photosensitive points to compare with more expensive devices.

3 Canon PowerShot SX620HS

Bargain. Good combination of light weight and run time
Country:
Average price: 12900 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.5

The most successful low-cost model confidently entered the ranks of the best thanks to a practical weight of 182 grams, a thin body of 2.8 centimeters and an excellent image stabilizer. With all this, a compact camera runs on battery longer than its neighbors in the rating and other representatives of the class. On average, the battery lasts for 295 photos. Connoisseurs of shooting in low light will definitely be pleased with Canon's built-in flash, which retracts into the body. Also, the camera is good for fans of experiments with optical effects. The presence of a special thread on the lens allows you to install a variety of attachments and filters.

Thanks to its practicality, this Canon has become one of the brand's most popular budget cameras. In addition to autonomy and clear shots on the go, the reviews note convenience, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support. The quality of the photo, of course, is inferior to professional models, but for its price it is the best.

2 Canon PowerShot SX540HS

The fastest shooting. User Choice Award. Optical super zoom
Country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: 17500 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Although compact cameras are traditionally considered not too powerful and not functional enough, a relatively inexpensive model belonging to the middle price segment surprisingly combines these important features and more. With a splendid 50x optical zoom that allows you to shoot from distances that would require binoculars, Canon also pleases with an excellent sensor with a resolution of 21.1 megapixels, which is slightly more than some beginner SLR cameras. In addition, the device stands out from its peers with its burst shooting speed, which reaches almost 6 frames per second. Improved speed also went to the video function, so that the camera shoots video at a speed of 60 frames per second.

All users rate the compact camera with the best scores and leave extremely positive feedback. In their opinion, this is an excellent choice for its price.

1 Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Kit

The best quality among compact digital cameras
Country: Japan
Average price: 44700 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The camera has been on the first lines of the ratings since 2014. This is the choice of quality connoisseurs who are willing to pay for it and are looking for a compact digital camera. The main advantage is high-quality optics. A bright lens (aperture opens up to F2) at close distances will allow you to shoot without a flash in low light.

Among other technical parameters, we note a 5x optical zoom, a macro mode, an impressive crop factor of 1.85 for a compact, Full HD video, Wi-Fi and a swivel touch display.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II could be called the perfect compact digital camera, but it lacks a viewfinder. Enthusiasts can purchase it separately, but the purchase will increase the cost of the camera by one and a half times.

The best Canon DSLRs for hobbyists

Contrary to the opinion of many beginners, SLR cameras are far from the same. Therefore, for those who are just starting to master photography, it is recommended to give preference to models for beginners. Unlike more sophisticated advanced and professional cameras, they are richer in ready-made modes and filters than in manual settings, which makes it much easier to create unique photos with improved properties. This allows you to gradually learn the possibilities of photographic equipment, without getting confused in options that are not always necessary for a beginner, requiring experience and certain knowledge.

Despite being easy to use, Canon cameras for beginners offer a lot of options, supporting a range of interfaces and add-ons. The best of them, among other things, are characterized by the maximum resolution available to the camera.

3 Canon EOS 1300D Kit

Price quality. Flash bracketing mode
Country:
Average price: 21580 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

The bronze of the review was earned by one of the most inexpensive cameras, which, despite its affordability, has received many advantages that make it the best solution for beginners among relatively budget devices. Decent color reproduction combined with a resolution of 5184 by 3456 pixels provides good image quality. Also, this Canon model is equipped with a good set of ISO modes that allow you to experiment with light, and even flash bracketing, which most competitors do not have. This auto mode, which varies the flash output with each shot, is used in continuous shooting to create a series of shots, each with a unique light level.

Also, according to numerous reviews, the SLR camera is very easy to use, endowed with an intuitive menu, holds a charge well and conveys the smallest details. But stabilization was not his forte.

2 Canon EOS 750D

Hybrid autofocus. Maximum flash range. battery pack
Country: Japan (manufactured in Taiwan)
Average price: 36990 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.7

One of the more expensive Canon designs for beginners is a worthy representative of the premium class. Equipped with a very rare autofocus system known as hybrid, the DSLR combines the best features of the other two systems and supports the useful Live View mode. It allows the photographer to track the subject in real time, making it easier to choose angles and settings. At the same time, the pictures are quiet and quite clear even in low light conditions. Powerful flash with a flash range of up to 12 meters is convenient for close to medium range shooting. Another advantage of Canon was the ability to connect a battery pack to increase battery life.

The main feature of the camera for beginners, many users call high quality photos. A rich package, including a set of lenses and a program for working with images in RAW format, will also please the buyer.

1 Canon EOS 200D Kit

Capacious battery and time-lapse. The thinnest and most compact
Country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: 35500 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

With a maximum 25.8 megapixels for this category, Canon is ideal for both beginners and amateurs who continue to slowly master photography. Despite the excellent image quality and functionality, the novelty of 2018 can be called inexpensive, in comparison with analogues. Also, the camera is equipped with a capacious battery, designed for autonomous shooting up to 650 photos, which makes it one of the most energy-efficient in the category. Time-lapse mode for shooting at long intervals for creating time-lapse videos. At the same time, the camera is thin, and its weight does not exceed 456 grams. Therefore, it is convenient to take it to outdoor photo shoots.

Among other things, in the reviews, the strengths are often called flash illumination for focusing in poor lighting conditions, mobility, and touch control. The overall performance and excellent build complete the image of the best model for beginners.

The best Canon DSLRs for advanced users

Models for advanced photographers are a reasonable choice for those for whom the functionality of a camera for beginners is already cramped, but there is still not enough experience and knowledge to work with full-fledged professional equipment. Also, a significant factor in favor of this category can be the price, because semi-professional devices are many times cheaper and often with approximately the same properties. At the same time, Canon DSLRs successfully combine amateur auto modes with manual settings, giving the owner a huge selection of filters, lighting levels and so on.

All this does not prevent advanced Canon cameras from being relatively compact and in some cases not even heavier than digital counterparts. Therefore, for location shooting or a photo report about the trip, they are the best fit.

3 Canon EOS 7D Mark II Body

Best reportage camera
Country: Japan
Average price: 84990 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.5

For reportage shooting, the EOS 7D Mark II is the best option, it’s not for nothing that the camera is compared to a machine gun. In the latest version, the rate of fire has been increased to a record 10 frames per second. And this is not just a marketing ploy: frame processing occurs instantly without a limit on the number of shots. At this speed, the shutter resource increased to 200 thousand is relevant.

Autofocus to match reportage model: 65 cross-type focus points. The lever on the body for adjusting the focus will help you not to miss an important moment in a series of rapidly changing events. The accuracy and speed of autofocus is reflected in the quality of video recording. To record scenes, the necessary connectors and settings are provided. The speed is 50/60 fps at Full HD resolution.

Improved protection against dust and moisture, a reliable metal body of a SLR camera will allow you to shoot in difficult conditions without the risk of damaging your equipment.

2 Canon EOS 77D Body

Profitable price
Country: Japan
Average price: 47275 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.7

Canon's inexpensive SLR camera, which is optimally suited for advanced photographers and progressive amateurs. There is a 3-inch swivel touchscreen and another additional screen, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module and the ability to shoot video in Full HD. The 25.8 megapixel matrix captures bright, juicy shots. Autofocus is fast and accurate.

The reviews note the best build quality, the presence of separate buttons for turning on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and light weight. Together with a set of batteries, the camera weighs only 540 grams. There is also a nice bonus - two types of menu. One is standard for professional photographers, the other is for beginners, flavored with colored icons. There are electronic and digital stabilizers. The main disadvantages are the lack of dust and moisture protection and fast charge consumption when using wireless communication interfaces.

1 Canon EOS 80D Body

The best ratio of price and quality
Country: Japan
Average price: 65390 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The new Canon model is rapidly conquering the market. It is separated from professional full-frame equipment by one key difference - a crop factor of 1.6. Compared to the previous version, the SLR camera turned out to be even more perfect. The sensor size has grown from 20.9 to 24.2 megapixels, and 45 focus points (instead of 19) ensure precise focusing, even when objects are located at the edges of the frame. The phase detection autofocus system allows you to comfortably shoot photos and videos. By the way, the frame rate in Full HD in the EOS 80D is increased to 60 frames. The novelty will help out the photographer during reportage work: the shooting speed is 7 frames per second.

Among other innovations, we will add an electronic level, Wi-Fi and NFC modules. This is the best offer on the market for advanced SLR cameras in terms of price and quality.

The best Canon DSLRs for professionals

It is impossible to be called a professional photographer without having the appropriate equipment. Therefore, despite the numerous advantages of relatively inexpensive cameras for beginners and advanced users, Canon's SLR models for the pros are the best solution for those who decide to make photography their life's work. After all, this category is characterized by the largest number of megapixels of the matrix, an abundance of manual adjustments and additional features, extended continuous shooting, the highest quality sound when shooting video, and other advantages.

Surprisingly, with such rich functionality, many professional cameras hold a charge longer than representatives of other categories. At the same time, they support most of the known formats.

3 Canon EOS 5DSR Body

The best SLR camera for studio shooting. Matrix 50.6 megapixels
Country: Japan
Average price: 116,000 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

The SLR camera is aimed primarily at studio and advertising photographers and expands the possibilities of commercial shooting. The camera occupies a leading position in the ratings, thanks to an improved matrix with a resolution of 50.6 megapixels.

In addition to high resolution, the Canon EOS 5DSR is famous for its speed, but is inferior to its closest competitors in light sensitivity. But if you take into account the use of pulsed light in the studio, then the disadvantage will seem insignificant.

A feature of a full-frame camera is the ability to shoot with crop factors of 1.3 and 1.6. Another useful option is the horizon level in the viewfinder. Canon EOS 5DSR will be the best for studio photographers, but the options for outdoor work are limited. According to photographers, the model is demanding on optics, the potential of the "carcass" is revealed with new L-series lenses.

2 Canon EOS 6D Body

The optimum ratio of price and quality
Country: Japan
Average price: 60500 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.7

An affordable full-frame DSLR is comparable to premium cameras at half the price. Proven electronics went on sale in 2012, became a breakthrough of its time. In particular, the presence of timely installed Wi-Fi and GPS modules helps to occupy the first places in the ratings.

When using top-end lenses, a SLR camera will allow you to achieve excellent detail. The low noise level and high working ISO allow you to shoot at dusk and in dimly lit rooms. The rate of fire is less than that of competitors - 4.5 frames per second, but this is enough for most creative tasks. The camera decently writes video, buyers have no complaints about the sound and detailing of the picture.

The affordable cost of a "full frame" was reflected in ergonomics. Compared to older models, the button functionality is truncated and does not allow you to quickly adjust the set parameters. But these shortcomings cannot be called significant. If you're short on cash, the Canon EOS 6D is your best bet.

1 Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Body

most popular DSLR
Country: Japan
Average price: 166840 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The full-frame EOS 5D Mark IV went on sale in September 2016. It became a continuation of the legendary Canon line. The fourth generation of 5D has become even more perfect. Compared to its predecessor, the model received an increased number of 31.7 megapixels, Wi-Fi modules, GPS, the ability to record video in 4K format and a touch screen.

For other parameters, there are no fundamental differences. In the right hands, Canon can do wonders with top-of-the-line optics. Ringing sharpness, spectacular background blur, shooting in low light conditions. Even picky experts call ISO values up to 3200 working.

Like its predecessor, Mark IV has a metal case with dust and moisture protection. The equipment is not afraid of light blows and the vagaries of the weather, and the metal prevents radio interference, reducing the amount of interference from mobile phones. The DSLR is praised for its lightning-fast focusing speed: autofocus rarely falters even when shooting dynamic scenes.

However, some critics considered the changes made insufficient and say that the Mark IV is losing ground in the ratings. The disadvantages include a small buffer size and a rather weak processor: the electronics do not have time to process video in 4K format. Despite this, sales of the legendary digital camera are growing.

Best Canon Interchangeable Lens Mirrorless Cameras

Mirrorless models are great for those who understand photography well enough to master the nuances of interchangeable lenses. However, professional knowledge is not required to master the majority of cameras in the category. Interchangeable-lens models are few and far between, and most come in the Kit variant, which means that the device comes with at least one carefully chosen lens, and sometimes a whole set.

The lack of a mirror gives cameras of this type some advantages over the mirror type when recording video. However, they are much smaller and lighter. Therefore, this is a good intermediate option between a DSLR and a digital model.

3 Canon EOS R Body

Waterproof case
Country: Japan
Average price: 119900 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Professional mirrorless camera "Canon" with an ergonomic body waterproof housing. The reviews indicate that the digital viewfinder is sensible. That compatibility with EF lenses is complete. that the color reproduction is correct. That the image quality is perfect - at the level of 5D Mark IV.

Video recording in Full HD is excellent. Focus is fast and accurate, it is convenient to tap on the touch screen. Focusing by zones and by eyes work equally well. With 4K, everything is not so smooth, but with a strong desire, you can also shoot high-quality content. This is the best compact size camera that is suitable for the role of a second camera for a photographer. It is lightweight, small in size and has a comfortable grip, making it ideal for travel and street photography.

2 Canon EOS M100 Kit

The largest maximum series of shots. Image quality. Fast autofocus
Country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: 30290 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

The stylish novelty of 2018 differs from its competitors not only in its original corrugated body and bright retractable flash, but also in the power of some functions. First of all, the camera will please the owner with the best number of effective light-sensitive elements of the matrix in the category, which reaches a figure of 24.2 megapixels, as well as a resolution of 6000 by 4000 pixels. Therefore, there can be no doubt about the quality of the pictures and the possibility of their enlargement or printing in a large format. The strength of the camera was also continuous shooting. A speed of more than 6 frames per second, as well as a maximum number of shots of 21 for RAW format and 89 for JPEG, which is familiar to everyone, will be useful for sports shooting.

In addition, according to numerous reviews, this Canon model has a sharp and very fast autofocus, good stabilization and photo quality. Also, many note the pleasant ergonomics, intuitive menu, autonomy.

1 Canon EOS M50 Kit

The best fast shooting speed. Microphone input. Flash shoe
Country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: 43990 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.7

The leader of the best cameras with interchangeable lenses is becoming a powerful device with additional features, found mainly only in not too cheap professional and semi-professional DSLRs. Unlike competitors, this model is not deprived of the ability to connect additional flashes. A special device called a shoe allows you to connect and synchronize any external portable flash with the camera, thereby giving fans a good field of activity to experiment with light. The presence of a microphone input will significantly improve the sound of video materials. Canon is also good at burst shooting, reaching speeds up to 10 frames per second.

At the same time, in the reviews, buyers note an abundance of settings that are suitable not only for beginners, but also for advanced users. In addition, the camera received an excellent electronic viewfinder and convenient button layout.

The sensor is small, but not too small either. There are a lot of megapixels for such a sensor, which means the pixel density is high. Not very good in terms of diffraction limit, but good in terms of macro photography.

The fast shutter speed is limited to 1/4000 sec, which is slightly slower than normal (by 1 stop). It's annoying, but not critical. In clear weather, you can capture the polarizer and thereby compensate for the shutter speed limitation.

The camera is equipped with hybrid autofocus, ie. combines the function of contrast autofocus, characteristic of mirrorless cameras, and phase, which works on the basis of the matrix itself.

The LCD screen is the only way to focus. 1 Million Pixels for such a screen are not many and not few. I would like more, but so far in the cameras Canon The maximum is only 1.6 megapixels.

Notable new mount EF-M. It is interesting primarily because it was developed by Canon and therefore it is expected to work correctly with Canon lenses for SLR cameras. This should make up for the small line of EF-M lenses that exists today.

Lens adapter Canon EF from Canon DSLRs to cameras Canon EF-M.

Battery and Charging

There is a small capacity of the battery. But the camera screen is constantly working for focusing and viewing. Therefore, it is recommended to acquire an additional one. Maybe not branded.

Equipment

The camera comes with:

Canon EOS M camera
- Lens EF-M 18-55/3.5-5.6 IS STM

Battery LP-E12
- Charger LC-E12E
- Strap EM-100DB
- USB cable
- Documentation

In my "premium" configuration, except for the adapter for lenses Canon EF There was also a remote control for the camera.

Permission

For testing resolution was used from Schneider.

This is my first time using this photo world, so the results have yet to be correlated with previous testing methods for .
In theory, more precisely, but in the photo world we see the result with our eyes. Now I have both methods involved and future testing will be very accurate. Today it is a "pen".

Partly for this reason, I "perverted" in this way.

In frame ZEISS Otus 28/1.4 installed via EF->EF-M adapter.

And the second reason was to try out the idea of combining a large and expensive lens with a camera sensor. The camera is only required to record the result of the lens, in fact, in this case, it is just a box for storing the sensor. This is especially true for landscape photography.

Focusing in such a bundle is difficult. the screen lacks pixels, but I managed to achieve just under 80 lp/mm at F2, which is a result I've never seen before with a wide-angle lens.

Macro Capabilities

I also got the idea to try out the macro capabilities of this camera. its pixel density is quite high (232 pix/mm).

For this I used a macro lens Canon EF 100/2.8L IS USM and two native extension rings from Canon for 12 and 25mm.

Focusing without a flash is pretty easy with this camera. Turn on tracking autofocus and aim at the subject. But for this, the subject of macro photography must be strongly lit.
I always use a flash in macro photography, and therefore I was interested in working with a flash, but the camera does not understand "foreign" flashes and radio synchronizers and does not have the ability to turn off the emulation of the current one if there is no native on-camera flash in the "hot shoe". Fi!

So for shooting with a third-party flash, I had to try pretty hard. I hope it will console you that the camera understands all native flashes Canon, so in real life, in nature, you may not have any difficulties shooting insects, for example.

Well, the possibilities are great!

Evolution of the Canon EOS M System

A story about the history of the system and how a professional full-frame DSLR photographer came to work with the Canon EOS M System.

In September 2016, Canon's EOS M line of mirrorless cameras was expanded with the flagship M5 model, which incorporates a number of advanced technologies previously used in the company's SLR cameras. This allowed the new product to stand almost on a par with professional DSLRs in many respects, while retaining all the advantages of compact system cameras. Our expert, who has been familiar with the Canon EOS M system since its inception, has been testing the EOS M5 for a week and now shares his impressions and evaluates the new product in comparison with previous cameras in the line.

When the first Canon mirrorless camera was introduced in 2012, which gave rise to the whole Canon EOS M family, I was really excited - for a very long time I wanted to have a compact system camera for everyday shooting, visiting, walking and traveling without burdensome trunks ... But, nevertheless, I wanted a camera more serious than an ordinary soap dish, with the possibility of using interchangeable lenses, and even better - optics for full-frame cameras, which I already got.

Canon EOS M answered my needs like no other camera. After its announcement, I followed the news very closely, looked through all the materials with test shots, and by the time sales began, my opinion was formed, I was already well prepared and determined to buy this camera at all costs.

It so happened that the start of sales of new items coincided with my vacation, which I was going to spend in an Asian country. Upon arrival at the Canon store, I was able to profitably purchase a set of an EOS M camera, an EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake lens, and an EF Mount Adapter EF-EOS M lens adapter. it was out of the question - I immediately started shooting, both with a “pancake” and those lenses that I had with me for a Canon full-frame SLR camera. The latter lain the whole vacation in a bag, not in demand at all.

I immediately liked the capabilities of the new product I bought: there is shooting in RAW, a bright, clear touch screen, the presence of familiar shooting modes, including manual and semi-automatic, through an adapter - compatibility with a large fleet of Canon optics and more. The small dimensions of the metal case with pleasant outlines and good ergonomics, good arrangement of controls, intuitive interface.

Since I shoot with different devices, with different image control methods, the lack of a viewfinder was not a problem for me. It is convenient for me to shoot both with it and without it, looking with both eyes at the screen, like at the monitor of a video camera or a compact soap dish, for example. The brightness of the screen was quite enough for shooting in bright sunlight.

What pleased me the most was the ability to touch the screen with your finger to get a clear and always correctly exposed photo. Even with backlight, the faces in the photo always turned out well. Marriage during such shooting is minimized, which is very important when traveling, where time to view photos on the spot is not always available, and free space on the memory card is limited. And here - and time for the subsequent selection and processing of images is spent many times less. Viewing the captured photos turned out to be simple and very convenient - the touch screen allows you to “stretch” the picture with your fingers to enlarge the fragment and control the sharpness. All these joys were supplemented by the possibility of video shooting in Full HD format.

The EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens quickly won my sympathy and became standard. Tiny size - pancake form factor, bright, sharp wide open, with fast autofocus, beautiful bokeh and pleasing colors. Unexpectedly flexible, this beautiful lens is suitable for a wide range of applications. And so far I think this is the best lens for the EOS M system.

With the help of an adapter, I tried on the EOS M camera almost all of my lenses from full-frame Canon with an EF mount, as well as mechanical lenses: Helios, Leicas, Zeiss and others - all for which I already had mount adapters EF.

Mount Adapter EF-EOS M

The results were perfect for me. For me, the camera had the only but significant drawback - the slow autofocus system. But, despite this, I used the EOS M very often, and carried it with me everywhere. The EOS M system - a camera with multiple lenses and the necessary accessories - took up a very small camera bag and became a faithful companion on my travels.

By the time the EOS M3 was released in the spring of 2015, I was already quite an experienced user of the Canon EOS M and, of course, could not pass by the novelty. Once again at the forefront of buyers, I appreciated the updated design, tilting screen and other changes.

Canon EOS M3 has grown in size, but also made a big step forward in the development of the line. The increase in megapixels, of course, is a good thing, but the fast autofocus, the presence of Wi-Fi, the built-in flash, focus peaking when shooting in manual focus mode and the quick response to the shutter button pleased me much more.

A wheel for selecting modes and exposure compensation was added, a wheel for selecting parameters framing the shutter button, a multifunctional button appeared. The camera got the ability to install an external viewfinder in the "hot shoe", but I decided not to spend extra money and used a wonderful tilting screen, which is convenient for shooting from ground level or, conversely, with outstretched arms when the camera is overhead. The swivel mechanism even made it possible to rotate the screen up 180 degrees. In this position, you can easily take a selfie, while the picture on the screen also flips.

Canon EOS M3, top view

I used this opportunity to shoot a video interview on the go, when the characters walk and talk, and I walk in front of them, but not backwards, as you have to do with most cameras, but normally. The screen is tilted up vertically and stands above the camera, and I hold it with the lens back, but at the same time I control the image on the screen. The case of such use is not very frequent, but there are a lot of options where a rotary screen can come in handy.

By the way, the Canon EOS M10 model, which appeared in October 2015, the screen can rise in the same way.

EOS M - main features:

  • 3-inch 1,040,000-dot Clear View II color LCD touchscreen with Live View support;
  • Six white balance settings;
  • Possibility of obtaining JPEG / RAW-images with a maximum resolution of 5184 x 3456 pixels;
  • Capable of recording MPEG-4/H.264 video at 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30/25/24 fps, 1280 x 720 pixels at 60/50 fps, or 640 x 480 pixels at 60 fps 50 frames per second (in all cases, together with stereo sound);
  • Slot for SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards (including removable Eye-Fi drives equipped with an integrated Wi-Fi module);
  • Built-in GPS-receiver (optional);
  • USB 2.0 interface;
  • Mini HDMI port;
  • Automatic scene type intelligent recognition mode;
  • Versatility thanks to interchangeable lenses;
  • Easy to use touch screen;
  • Transmission of the natural atmosphere when shooting in low light conditions;
  • Full HD video recording and video insertion mode.

The premiere of the budget model looks quite logical. This will give some time to account for possible errors and receive feedback from users. In the end, there is nowhere to rush anyway - all competitors have long presented their mirrorless cameras. So Canon could only overtake Leica. The abbreviation EOS got into the name not by chance. In this way, Canon wants to emphasize a greater resemblance to DSLR cameras than to PowerShot compacts.

The Canon EOS M features an 18-megapixel 22.3x14.9mm CMOS sensor, a DIGIC V control processor, a new type of Canon EF-M mount, and a 3-inch 1.04-megapixel Clear View II touch display. And if we talk about the fact that the screen is exactly the same as in the Canon EOS 650D camera, then it should be added that in this case its position is fixed, there is no tilt or pan/tilt mechanism here. But this is justified due to the compactness of the case.

The sensor is made using capacitive technology, so it responds well to pressing and is generally very pleasant to use. The camera also lacks a built-in flash and only has a “hot shoe” connector for connecting an external one. ISO sensitivity can be adjusted from ISO 100 - 12800 (expandable to 25600) and exposure compensation within ±3 EV in steps of 1/3 EV.
Canon's DIGIC 5 processor ensures superb color reproduction and natural skin tones, while ultra-fast shutter speeds capture the most fleeting moments. Shooting in the evening or even in difficult night conditions is also no problem for the EOS M, thanks to an ISO sensitivity range of 100 to 12800 (expandable to 25600).

Canon EOS M came out very compact. Even if you look at the numerical values of the dimensions, you have to admit that in life it seems even smaller. But that's not the point; the important thing is that the novelty looks attractive, one might even say friendly. Rounded shapes and a figured recess under the shutter button only add aesthetics.

Camera control involves the active use of the touch screen, while there are relatively few mechanical buttons. There are few of them also because this is still an entry-level camera. The front side of the body, which, by the way, is made of magnesium alloy, contains only a lens release button, an autofocus assist lamp and a tiny rubber pad for comfortable holding the camera in your hands. Here, of course, is the bayonet itself. The mount is metal, but the mount itself is new - EF-M. Rumors that Canon will follow the path of Pentax and make a system compatible with "mirror" optics have remained rumors.

On the top panel there is a shutter button, combined with a rotary lever for selecting shooting modes. The position with the symbol "A +" is responsible for automatic shooting modes. The central position of the selector activates photography, and the icon with a video camera prepares the camera for starting video recording. Everything is traditional here. But there is also an unpleasant feature. Video recording starts only after pressing the red round button on the rear panel. Thus, you cannot start recording at any time with a single click. All current Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, as well as Nikon 1, have this feature. Either Canon specifically took such a step in the case of the most affordable camera of the future line, or in two years of “studying the experience of competitors”, no one paid attention to such a “trifle”.

At the top there is also a power button, a hot shoe connector for connecting a flash and accessories, and a stereo microphone.

The back side is occupied by the display, and next to it there are four mechanical keys plus a navigation button with a confirmation button in the center. The left side is occupied by a plug covering the standard set of connectors - A / V, USB, HDMI and an input for an external microphone.

On the bottom of the housing is the battery compartment and a port for a memory card. Of interest is the strap attachment system - instead of standard loops, Canon designers used something new. The mount system consists of two clips that mate with mating parts on the camera body, as a result of which the mount can freely rotate 360 degrees. There are no questions for convenience, but how reliable will such a design be? This is what we have to find out in the review.

In addition to the “carcass” itself, the package includes one of two lenses (either two lenses at once, or one of the lenses + an adapter for EF / EF-S optics), as well as a flash, a belt, a charger with an LP-E12 battery.

One of the lenses - 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 - is an absolutely standard complete "glass" for most cameras, both SLR and system. And although we have not met him live yet, expectations are traditionally skeptical. Typically, such a lens replaces the bayonet cap, and a more or less decent picture from it can only be obtained at aperture 7-8. A much more interesting option is the EF-M 22 / 2.0 lens. With a crop factor of 1.6, it gives an equivalent focal length of 35mm, which in my opinion is ideal for most mirrorless camera tasks. Panasonic used to have a 20/1.7 pancake that came bundled with the Lumix GF1. And although the equivalent focal length is slightly different (35mm vs. 40mm), it's safe to say that these lenses are a breeze.

Focusing occurs both using a high-speed phase method, and a contrast, more accurate one. The 31-point autofocus system works in tracking mode when shooting video. All footage is saved to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, and Eye-Fi wireless technology is also supported. Claimed battery life is only 230 CIPA shots. The result is modest, frankly. But, as experience shows, if you shoot without a flash, and do not devote much time to viewing the footage, you can easily get a result twice as declared.

Every element of the EOS M has been thoughtfully designed to make it as easy as possible to create high-quality images. From the first touch of the bright, crisp 7.7cm (3.0") Clear View II touchscreen, the EOS M is easy to operate. automatic scene type recognition (Scene Intelligent Auto) depending on the type of subject and shooting conditions, and focus on the composition and choosing the best moment to press the shutter button.

Shooting modes include both full automation of the process, and shooting with aperture priority, shutter speed, as well as with full manual exposure control. The Canon EOS M is capable of saving images in RAW format at 14-bit encoding (which is really cool, since most potential competitors only offer 12-bit RAW), as well as burst shooting at 4.3 frames per second.

Owners of the EOS M can have absolute confidence in the capabilities of their camera as they are offered the world's most versatile camera system. Whether you want to capture some detail in close-ups or shoot a distant subject, you can mount any of Canon's widest range of EF lenses with the new EF-EOS M Mount Adapter.

With Canon Speedlite flashes, you can also apply creative lighting techniques to make your shots even more interesting. In addition, creative filters such as Toy Camera Effect, Grainy B&W, or a filter that reproduces fisheye lens distortion provide unique images. Filters can be applied before the shot is taken, with a Live View preview of the result, allowing you to experiment with different effects and choose the one that suits you best.

When regular still photography isn't enough, the EOS M easily switches to high-quality Full HD video recording with stereo sound. Video Snapshot mode helps you create dynamic, professionally edited scenes directly in the camera.

The EOS M doesn't just work with Canon EFi lenses, accessories and Speedlites; special compact accessories are provided for it. Two new EF-M lenses, the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom and the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM flat wide-angle, are small in size and have excellent performance. They use new stepper motor control technology for exceptionally smooth autofocus, as well as Canon's precision optical elements. With their compact design, these lenses are the perfect complement to a miniature camera.

A new external Speedlite 90EX flash was also developed especially for the new device. It can be used with lenses as small as 24mm (35mm 35mm film equivalent) and provides enough light to shoot subjects up to 9 meters away at ISO 100. Master mode enables wireless control multiple flashes, allowing advanced users to experiment with different lighting effects.

The EOS M is available in elegant black, glossy white, silver or red in a stylish, compact design.

Canon's marketers didn't go for dumping, setting a price of $799.99 for a kit with an EF-M 22 mm F2.0 STM lens. And this is the announced price for the US market. European prices will be higher. The most reasonable acquisition at the moment looks like a kit with a fixed lens. But with the price of the adapter, Canon obviously got excited - $ 200 for it is an obvious bust. And it can almost certainly be argued that over time, the cost of the adapter will be revised down.

The above images show that the quality of images produced by entry-level SLR cameras has been successfully achieved. When looking closely at full-size images, you can see that the sharpness is not as high as we would like.

Comparison of the appearance of EOS M and

Conclusions:

In general, the first impressions of the Canon EOS M are very mixed. And if the announcement proved that the expectation was justified, then the premiere of Canon does not allow us to resist the question “what did you do for two years?”. With conclusions, however, while it is worth waiting. A lot can change after Photokina and extensive testing of the camera.

Nothing special is seen below - a compartment for a battery and a memory card, as well as a standard thread for mounting on a tripod. If you use a tripod with a docking pad, it blocks the cover and prevents you from quickly changing the memory card. This is a very popular ailment of compact cameras and mirrorless cameras. However, again, the positioning of the EOS M does not allow us to classify this as a serious ergonomic flaw.

Screen and interface

As you can see, Canon has abandoned most of the controls in favor of the touch interface. Potential buyers should get used to it. The display itself deserves all the praise. This is a 3-inch TFT-matrix with a resolution of 1,040,000 dots, high touch sensitivity and even multitouch support. The same screen, by the way, was used in the Canon EOS 650D. True, there he had a rotary design.

The space between the matrix and the protective glass is still filled with transparent rubber to minimize glare. Viewing angles are close to 180 degrees, which means you can forgive the screen for a fixed design.

Menu navigation is organized using buttons and a navigation dial. It's very similar to the EOS 650D's menu, and for those familiar with Canon's DSLRs, it's easy to get the hang of the camera.

Functionality

The Canon EOS M inherited the 18-megapixel CMOS sensor from its older relative, the EOS 650D SLR camera. The matrix is notable for the fact that it contains points for both contrast and phase focusing. The DSLR, of course, has a full-fledged phase-focusing system, and the EOS M uses a hybrid phase-contrast focusing method. The sensitivity range of the sensor, as in the case of the EOS 650D, is ISO 100-12800, expandable to ISO 25600 in photo mode. By the way, the noise is very moderate. One of the best performance among mirrorless cameras. Below we take a look at the test shots.

The second element, borrowed from the mirror brothers, was the DIGIC 5 processor. According to the developers, the performance of the chip has increased 5 times compared to the previous DIGIC 4. The sensor-processor bundle offers the user a fairly good rate of fire: 4.3 frames in full resolution are produced per second with focusing at a buffer depth of 17 JPEG or 6 RAW shots.
