DIY home library. Do-it-yourself home library We make a do-it-yourself library rack

A home library is not just books arranged in lockers. No, a home library is, first of all, a separate room or, in the worst case, a corner of one of the rooms specially reserved for it. However, before you start building a home library with your own hands, ask yourself the question: do I need this? It doesn't make much sense to invest time and effort into creating a home library when you only have a few paperback and newsprint books. It is a completely different matter if you have a collection of classical works collected over the years and old works that are already difficult to get anywhere and are not ashamed to show guests. In that case, the home library is not only worth your effort - no, you simply HAVE to build it. The home library is a mute witness to the cultural level, erudition and sense of taste in the literature of its owner. Your home library should be in a prominent place for guests, as it speaks volumes about your passions and intellectual level in the best possible way.

Choosing a location for the library

First, do not forget that all truly valuable and rare copies of books must be securely hidden from the biggest danger - animals and children. In turn, if you collect a library on a random basis, then it would be best to divide it among your family members. Give children's books to children, cookbooks - place somewhere in the kitchen, and to store books common use use the living room. In a small apartment where there is no free space, racks can be taken out into the corridor.

Choosing where to store books

In general, there are three main types of structures for storing books - a rack, a shelf and a cabinet - as well as all sorts of variations. Let's talk now about each of them separately.

The shelving unit is the most practical piece of storage furniture that consists of a series of shelves mounted on racks. Its main external sign is the absence of a back wall and door leaves, although today you can also find partially closed racks. This design makes optimal use of the free space in the room and provides easy access to books. And since open shelves often collect a lot of dust, shelving is usually used to store a large volume of books that do not require special care.

A bookcase is essentially a shelving unit closed with doors, which is perhaps the safest storage for books. Cabinet doors and a back wall adequately protect the books from dust, reducing cleaning time, but they interfere with airflow, which is why the contents have to be ventilated from time to time. Cabinets are distinguished by their bulkiness and are difficult to combine with the rest of the furniture in the house, however, when choosing expensive materials, they can perfectly decorate the room, giving it solidity.

The shelf usually does not differ in capacity and is not able to withstand a lot of weight. It is best suited for a relatively small library or a collection of several books that need to be always at hand. Shelves do not have to be hung on the wall - you can find floor and desktop models, representing a miniature likeness of shelving. Hanging shelves most often have some kind of hidden fasteners like pins inside the shelf, or they are installed on remote consoles. You can find out the maximum load that your shelf can withstand from the product data sheet.

10 basic laws for the placement and storage of books

  • Do not place books near heating appliances - high temperature and dryness can cause deformation of both paper and cardboard. The optimal temperature for storing books is 15-18 degrees Celsius.
  • Books should not be exposed to direct sunlight, because the sun will quickly fade the paper and become brittle. It is better to keep bookcases away from windows or put them sideways. In turn, glass doors can absorb some of the sunlight.
  • It is impossible to ventilate the room during damp weather and rains, as high humidity can provoke the development of microorganisms that destroy glue and paper. The relative humidity present in the room should not exceed 60%.
  • Keep your library in closed cabinets, as this way it will be much more reliably protected from dust and dirt.
  • For easier access to the necessary books, place them in one row.
  • Place books as vertically as possible so that the book block and binding do not warp. If part of the free space remains on the shelf, then fix the position of the books using specially designed limiters.
  • If the bindings are too tight, the bindings of the books begin to tear. The book density should be such that you can easily take out and then put back a copy of the book.
  • Can only be placed horizontally glossy magazines or books of large formats, and then only in cases where there were no shelves of a suitable height for them. Such stacks should not exceed a height of 10 cm.
  • The best option would be if any book is available to a person calmly standing on the floor. However, if your library is too large and requires a cupboard to the ceiling, then place the books that you least use at the top.

To date, there are typesetting racks from individual blocks-modules, the shape of which can be very diverse. The most important thing is that the so-called "cubes" can easily dock with each other. Thanks to this, you can independently create an unlimited number of the most different combinations, which can be disassembled and reassembled at any time, completely changing the rack. Wardrobes are placed along the walls the old-fashioned way, while shelving offers a lot more placement options. According to the type of placement, racks can be divided into: corner, wall and island.

The wall rack is installed directly close to the wall and is attached to it for greater reliability. This option is used most often, but there are many other options for placing shelving. So, today you can find racks in the form of hanging shelves. The main advantage of this model is to save space on the floor, but not all walls can withstand the weight of a structure filled with books.

As for corner cabinets, we are not talking so much about independent structures, but about corner elements, thanks to which usually two straight sections are connected into a corner. These corner elements make it possible to use even the most narrow and inconvenient areas, such as wall gaps between windows, to accommodate a book depository.

In turn, the island rack can be installed wherever you want - it keeps on the floor due to its weight. Such a rack is not difficult to distinguish from a wall rack: unlike a wall rack, it does not have a clearly defined front and is equally well arranged from all sides. Also, island racks are usually wider than wall racks. Their width and stockiness allows you to maintain stability without additional fasteners, and also makes it possible to put books in two rows, with spines in both directions, without sacrificing ease of access to books for this. The island rack is the best way quickly divide the room and partition the room. Very convenient are racks with wheels and stoppers, which allow you to fix the position of the rack.

Today, solid wood is rarely used, preferring pressed boards such as MDF and chipboard, due to their affordable price and the dimensional stability of the product, which they provide due to the fact that they do not dry out and do not undergo deformation. For a change, lining with natural veneer or polymer film, as well as varnish coatings are used. Chipboard can be used as a polymer film, and varnish can be matte, glossy, transparent and even colored. Most manufacturers offer at least two or three finishes that vary ad infinitum.

AT recent times the hollow furniture board tamburato became very popular. This material consists of two sheets of chipboard and a layer of cardboard honeycomb filler, which makes it possible to create large, but at the same time light furniture with a wide end (from 30 to 50 mm).

If your interior is dominated by the now popular high-tech style, then it will be perfectly complemented by a shelving made of aluminum or glass. Aluminum racks are distinguished by an affordable price and the ability to carry heavy loads. You should also not be afraid that the aluminum rack will look Soviet - modern finishes allow you to hide all its unremarkable sides. In turn, glass models are distinguished by their lightness and the ability not to clutter up the space. Modern glass, despite the apparent external fragility, can perfectly cope with any load.

Dimensions of bookcases and bookcases

Cabinets and racks are selected according to the pitch of the shelves: the smaller this parameter, the better. In order for the shelves not to sag under the weight of the books, their length should not exceed one meter, and the thickness should not be less than 2.5 cm. A model for one row of books is better suited than a deep one, since it will be very difficult for books in the second row enjoy. The depth and height of the shelves are determined based on the size of the books in the library. The appropriate shelf depth for small and standard books will be 15-25 cm, and for large books and albums, the preferred depth will be already 30-35 cm. height, thus adjusting them to stand out from the overall picture of the book. If you have a modular cabinet, then here you can foresee high and low cells - 10-12% of the total.

We make a rack for the library with our own hands

As an example, a rack assembled from MDF boards with a thickness of 19 mm (shelves and side walls) and 10 mm (rear wall) was used. MDF boards can be easily painted and processed if desired. Before applying to the finished rack special. water-soluble acrylic paint, you have to follow a few simple steps. For a quality surface, prime an untouched MDF board with a layer of primer and only after it is completely dry, sand it with sanding paper with a grit of 180. After that, apply two thin coats of paint in between, sanding the surface.

Shelving Action Plan

1. Glue a decorative strip of MDF board 4 cm wide and serving as a frame for the rack, butt-glue on the sides of the shelves. Remember to also check its location with a square when gluing, so that it is flush while maintaining a right angle.

2. Using white coated chipboard as spacers, mark the position of the shelves in the shelving.

3. Using a drill, make the necessary mounting holes, countersink from the outside and connect the shelves using screws.

Important nuances

To keep your bookcase at the right distance from the floor, use metal legs for a table or furniture. You may need to shorten them - a hacksaw will help you with this. When doing this, do not forget to put on a protective rubber tip so as not to spoil the floor surface. The shelving cannot topple forward if you take care to attach it to the ceiling using two long screws and dowels. In this case, you will need to install a spacer so that the screws between the shelf and the ceiling do not lift the rack.

Materials like chipboard and MDF are made from sawdust. However, while synthetic resins are usually used as a binder during the manufacture of chipboard, MDF particles are usually held together with lignin and paraffin. It follows from this that MDF is a more environmentally friendly material, but with a lower density than chipboard.

Another tip would be that the required configuration of the rack can also be made to order by choosing from several aspen options the dimensions of the shelves that suit you, the number of open and closed sections, the type of doors (hinged or sliding). However, this will seriously affect the final cost of your product.

Someone may ask: what should I do with newspapers? One option would be to make your own newspaper rack. The newspaper rack consists of two identical plywood pieces. In order for the longitudinal sides to fit together, they are usually filed with a mustache, observing an angle of 60 °, after which they begin to create figured cutouts that will serve as a place for newspapers. For this purpose, both parts are combined and the locations of future holes are marked. Then holes are drilled with a 40 mm hole saw, while the distance between the centers of the holes should be 100 mm. After this is done, mark the lines of the jumpers and cut out all the excess with a jigsaw. At the end, all the parts are glued together, the upper edge is cut down at an angle of 45 degrees and the corresponding cover is glued.

In this article, you will learn how I solved all these issues and organized a personal electronic library using the Springpad online service. Looking ahead, I will say that the result completely satisfied me, so it seemed to me that this experience is quite worthy of your attention.

First of all, I want to list the list of tasks that I wanted to solve using this service. I am sure that most of them are familiar to any book lover.

As you can see, the list is not small, but for all its items, Springpad found the necessary functions. Let me remind you that Springpad is a service for storing your notes, links, pictures and other materials that can be . All information in it can be organized in the form of separate notebooks. Notepads are ordinary and special, designed to store only a certain kind of information. As one of these special notebooks, the developers offer us a separate directory for storing their book collection. Let's see how it can be used for our purposes.

Adding Books

There are several ways to add books to Springpad. There is a web interface, special clipper extensions for browsers, mobile applications for Android and iOS. Thus, wherever you find a mention of the publication you are interested in - on a web page, in a letter, forum or chat - you can immediately send it to your reading list. The add window looks like this.

If you enter a title in English, then the service itself will look for relevant information for you and carefully fill in all the fields, including cover, genre, author, and even a short description. For Russian-language publications, you will have to do all this manually, which, however, is not at all difficult. As a result, your reading list will look as appetizing as the illustration at the beginning of this post, or, if you prefer, a more modest list.

File upload

In order not to waste time looking for downloaded, bought, borrowed books among archives all over your hard drive, it is best to store them in one place. The electronic library based on the Springpad service is just great for this, because it allows you to upload an unlimited number of files, the size of which does not exceed 25 MB, which is more than enough for texts.

To add files, open the book editing menu and select the item Add Link or File. Once the file is uploaded, it will appear at the bottom below the cover image. Now all your archives will be in in perfect order and ready to download on any device you prefer to use for reading.

After reading

Personally, I, probably like many book lovers, do not want to part with the books I like so soon. In addition, sometimes you have to refer to the material repeatedly to clarify any nuances. Therefore, it is necessary that the books read be moved to a special shelf, where they would not interfere with anyone, but were always at hand. And Springpad does it very well.

Just move the switch , which is on the card of each edition, in position read, and the book goes to the shelf read. At the same time, a small window appears with a suggestion to write your review-comment about the content. Here you can rate the book on a five-point system. Those books that will receive a rating of four and five points from you will go to a special favorites shelf.

Sharing

Of course, the approach I proposed, despite all its advantages, is not without its shortcomings. Springpad is by no means suitable for those people who download and store gigabytes of texts on their hard drives. The approach I suggested involves manually adding books, searching for covers on your own, writing comments about your impressions of what you read. In a word, this method is more suitable for those who really read, and do not collect multi-volume archives, which, alas, will never be opened.

A library is a room or structure (depending on what you have enough resources and patience for) where books are stored (no matter how trite it may sound). In minecraft, you can craft books and bookshelves that have a pretty nice, beautiful texture, so more and more players organize libraries in their home and beyond. This is a beautiful, useful, comfortable building. And the main thing is that it is not so difficult to make it.

What about the usefulness of the library? The fact is that such a building will, among other things, be very necessary for you. It will buff the effects in your enchanting tables, which means it will be very useful if you want to get an upgrade on your weapon or armor (upgrades for tools will also be amplified).

To build the library, you will need to arrange the blocks of bookshelves as shown in the figure below:

If you do not have enough resources for such a number of shelves, you can get by with a small structure, but keep in mind that the improvement effects will be weaker.

If you don’t know how to make shelves, it’s not a problem, I specially picked up crafting pictures:
