Configuring the modem using standard Windows tools
As already mentioned, some users do not like standard program MegaFonInternet. Therefore, we can get rid of it and prescribe manual settings for accessing the network. To do this, go to Control Panel - Network and Control Center and public access and select Set up a connection or network.
Next, select an Internet connection, and as the connection type, select Dial-up connection. The next step is to specify the connection settings. Here we indicate the standard dial-up number *99# and the connection name. You do not need to fill in the Name and Password fields, since MegaFon does not request them.
After the connection is created, you should go to its properties and uncheck "Request a name, password, certificate, etc.", on the "Security" tab, check the "Verification protocol (CHAP)" checkbox. Setting up a router to work with a modem
How to set up a MegaFon USB modem on a computer - we have already figured it out. Let's now discuss the situation where we need to configure the modem connected to the router. Here we must understand that to create such a bundle, you need a router that works correctly with 3G modems. The process of setting up the router is quite simple - we connect the modem to the USB port of the router and send it to reboot.
Next, go to the administrative panel and select the 3G connection settings item. As a rule, this item is placed in a separate line in the general menu. Also, many routers already have built-in support. automatic settings to create a connection to one or another cellular networks, including MegaFon. If there are no automatic settings, enter the data manually:
- Access point –internet;
- Dialing number - *99#;
- Username is empty;
- Password - empty;
- The connection name is arbitrary.
If necessary, check the box to automatically establish a connection(It is highly recommended not to go into the router settings every time). USB modems have become widespread throughout the modern world due to their miniaturized design, the absence of the need for AC 220 volts, and also due to the relative ease of connection and operation with them. All drivers and software necessary for the modem to work are installed automatically from the modem's Flash memory with minimal time. However, some manual configuration of the parameters by the user is still required. Consider the process of connecting a USB modem from the MTS provider in more detail.
So, in order to set up your Internet connection using a USB modem, first of all, you will need to remove the cover from the SIM card compartment and insert the latter into the slot intended for it. Your Windows (or other OS) should itself recognize the MTS modem as a new device and start installing drivers for it. Next, the installation of the necessary software by the MTS modem installer will automatically start. Otherwise, find your modem in the "My Computer" menu, in the flash memory of which the Connect Manager is located, then with the mouse (double-click the left button - LMB) click on the AutoRun.exe file. In turn, the installation wizard will start. In its window, it remains only to select the required language, click the "Ok" button and sequentially follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
Upon completion of this process, you will be able to launch the Connect Manager program from the software stored in the modem's flash memory using the shortcut that has already appeared on the Desktop. After literally a few seconds, the program should detect the signal. You can determine its level by the indicator image (whose location is the upper right corner of the window). The signal level may vary depending on the position of the modem in space. For convenient reorientation, it is recommended to connect the modem via a flexible USB extension cable.
Note! When looking for the best modem orientation, remember that the signal strength is displayed on the monitor screen with some time delay (several seconds).
So, the default USB modem setup should be done automatically. To connect to the Internet, it remains only in the "Connect" item, click "Connection". In the process of establishing a connection, you will see an image of traffic on the screen and hear the characteristic sound of a melody.
To configure the connection settings MANUALLY, go to the “Settings” item.
In the "Network" sub-item, you will be able to select the desired connection mode (either 3G or EDGE / GPRS). Right-click on the name of the network and select "Manual" from the drop-down menu. A list of network signals detected by the USB modem will appear. It remains only to decide on the choice of the network you need (for example, click "Select" on the item "MTS Rus 3G").
The menu item "Operations with PIN" will require you to enter the appropriate code. It may not be used at all. In the “Modem settings” item, the access point “internet.mts.ru” is prescribed, as well as the dial-up number * 99 #. In the fields "Login" and "Password" you can enter "mts" (in both fields), or you can not enter anything (just leave them blank). From the “Calls” item, it is possible to communicate by voice (if you have a microphone, as well as headphones or speakers). From the "Balance" menu item, you can find out the current state of your account by clicking on the "Check balance" button. Through the "SMS" item, you can send your own and read incoming SMS messages.
Some settings that are not essential for the MTS modem will help you find the "Device Manager". To use them, you will need to enter the "Control Panel", and then open the "Device Manager", in which you right-click (RMB) your modem, and then click on the "Properties" button in the drop-down submenu.
You can get to several auxiliary settings of the connected MTS modem by moving along such a long path: "Control Panel" → "Network and Sharing Center" → "Change adapter settings" → "MTS connection". By right-clicking on the last item of this path, select "Properties" in the drop-down submenu. This setting will allow you to enable or disable features such as "Hardware Flow Control", "Modem Error Handling" and "Data Compression" (of course, only if your modem supports them).

Sometimes the speed is limited at the cell level, for various reasons. And technical support does not particularly like to admit it. Sometimes the limitation is at the modem level (hardware and / or software), especially if it is “not the first freshness”. But you never know these reasons for speed limits! Therefore, you may have to repeat the setup procedure by changing base station or even an operator until you reach the desired result.
