On the eve of the spring conscription, which begins on April 1, we met with the military commissar of Udmurtia Alexander Komlev and found out how he himself ended up in the army, whether his sons served, and why there are more and more female military personnel.

- Alexander Georgievich, how did you yourself get into the army?

- Thanks to my wife. I was born and raised in Kemerovo, then my parents decided to move to Barnaul, and my future wife stayed in Kemerovo. So, to be near her, I entered the Kemerovo Higher Military School of Communications.

My parents, who had nothing to do with military affairs (my father worked all his life at a thermal power plant, my mother worked as an accountant), were satisfied with my choice of profession. They thought student life was too free for me. In addition, at school I was engaged in wrestling, traveled with the team to many cities in our large country. So I had all the data for entering the military school.

- How many places of service did you have to change before you ended up in Izhevsk?

- I had to travel, of course. Almost each of my new positions was associated with a move to a new place of service: to Germany, to the Orenburg region, to Moscow, Bashkiria ... Somehow it was considered that the youngest son had to change eight schools. Therefore, our own housing appeared only in 2004. But my example is not the most revealing yet. I have many acquaintances who have changed a dozen or more duty stations. For military personnel of my generation, this is par for the course.

“To get into the army, the guys even do laser vision correction”

“They offered to stay in Germany, but I returned”

- Where was it more difficult?

Probably in Germany. I got there in 1989, immediately after graduating from a military school, I started as a communications platoon commander in one of the motorized rifle divisions of a group of Soviet troops. Military units outside our country are experiencing a certain moral pressure. Therefore, performing any task in a foreign country, you feel a special responsibility, you feel pride in your homeland.

- Pride? Despite the fact that in 1989 in Russia there were empty shelves in stores and products were sold on coupons?

- Yes, Germany, which our country won, did not experience such problems. In everyday terms, everything was fine there, but this evoked a feeling of admiration, not envy, and did not prevent me and my colleagues from being proud of their country. We all wanted our country to live the same way.

In 1991, Alexander Komlev and his family returned home. Already four of them - his youngest son was born in Germany. It is recognized that they offered to stay, but he refused, although there were those who took advantage of this opportunity.

- Then did you regret not staying in Germany? You returned at a difficult time, when everyone in our country, including the army, did not live, but survived.

- With his wife, parents, we talked more than once on this topic. I speak frankly: I have never regretted and do not regret that we returned to Russia. I could not imagine how it is possible to stay forever in a foreign country. My parents raised me as a patriot, and the army environment only strengthened this feeling in me. Sounds loud, but it's true.

I'm probably quite conservative, but since then I have never been to Germany. What for? I'll come and see, and then what? For me, something else is more important. For example, so that biathletes compete not with German rifles, but with our Izhevsk rifles. This is much more of a concern. That's how I was brought up.

- You talk a lot about patriotism at meetings with schoolchildren and conscripts. How to return this feeling?

- Parents, teachers only own example should instill a sense of patriotism in children. And you need to do this constantly, and not on holidays - September 1, February 23 and May 9. Otherwise, we will not educate patriots.

How Izhevsk snowdrifts surprised a Siberian

– You have been living and working in Udmurtia since 2000. What were your first impressions of Udmurtia?

- Although I was born and raised in Siberia, I traveled to many cities of our country, in Izhevsk I was surprised by the snowdrifts - we moved here in the winter. I remember walking with my wife through the center of the city, and there the snowdrifts are higher than human height! We were so impressed then that we clutched our heads: where are we going! Well, we also knew the well-known joke about Udmurtia - the land of evergreen tomatoes.

- If we talk about conscripts, do guys from Udmurtia differ from conscripts from other regions?

- Everyone notes that our conscripts are calm and efficient, so they are happy to take them to the service.

- Do the guys themselves want to serve in the army?

– It is difficult to answer that question, although I get asked it often. I will answer this way: in 90 percent of cases, it is not the guys themselves who do not want to serve in the army. It is the parents who do not want to let them go from under their care, although the military service is now completely different from what it used to be. Somehow I even compared it to a resort. So, for example, soldiers can call their relatives, sleep an hour after dinner, go on vacation on weekends and holidays, they are provided with clothes and sports uniforms, in the barracks they live in cockpits of only 3-4 people. In addition, the quality of food has improved significantly. Most during the service gain weight.

It also often happens like this: young people who want to serve do not pass for health reasons, and those who want to “hang out”, on the contrary, turn out to be healthy. There are cases when guys, in order to get into the army, did laser vision correction, an operation to remove varicose veins.

Retired guys don't think the army is a waste of time. I judge this by the questionnaires that returned conscript soldiers fill out. 95 percent of them rate their service in the army on a five-point scale as “good” or “excellent”. The survey, which we have been conducting for several years, is anonymous, so everything is honest here. The guys note that the army taught them self-discipline, the ability to work in a team, to master modern views weapons. This is also important and necessary - we must be able to protect ourselves if necessary.

By the way, the service conditions of the contractors have noticeably improved. The best evidence of this is the women soldiers, of whom we have 40,000. They served before, but there were not so many of them. Women in the army is an indicator that the situation with allowance, with housing now available through military mortgages.

"The army taught me to keep my word"

You have two adult sons. Did they serve in the army?

- My wife and I initially decided that our sons should serve in the army. But the eldest son, unfortunately, did not pass for health reasons, he works as a realtor. And the younger one served, now he is an officer of the Federal Penitentiary Service. We never put pressure on our sons, we gave both freedom of choice. The decision of who to be, everyone took on their own, and I think it's right.

- Alexander Georgievich, you have been in uniform for almost 30 years. What has military service taught you, has it changed you?

- Any team affects a person. No wonder they say with whom you will lead from that and you will type. As for me, the army instilled in me a sense of responsibility. Therefore, I almost never promise anything to anyone. Many are offended, perceive it as a veiled refusal. But this is how I am arranged, I think that if I promised something, I must keep my word.
