Helmet cameras. The secret of mounting a GoPro on a complex helmet Helmet for gopro action camera

I, like many motorcyclists, love to film my rides. I prefer two attachment points - on the chest and on the chin of the helmet. Helmet mounts are often problematic due to the fact that the standard GoPro pads do not fit snugly on the helmet, which is fraught with the security of the camera mount. Under the cut, I will talk about a method of making an adapter for a platform that is quite popular on foreign sites, but with my important nuances and recommendations.

After the 2015 season, I bought a Bell Qualifier helmet. The helmet is excellent, I am completely satisfied. But as with the first helmet, there was a problem with attaching an action camera. I don’t like the option with a mount on the top of my head, with my height you can’t see either a motorcycle or a hand, only the road. My favorite attachment point is the chin.

Materials and tools that I needed:
1. Standard GoPro flat pad without double-sided tape (new or used).
2. New double-sided tape for the site.
3. "Cold welding", aka poxypol. I used colorless under the brand "Second".
4. Cyanoacrylate glue, aka superglue in a small tube. I used Moment.
5. Ordinary wide stationery tape (it is better to use smooth masking tape, but in no case paper).
6. And also cling film or stretch film, P180 sandpaper, narrow paper masking tape.
7. Drill. In my case, a Dremel 3000 with coarse to medium grit emery wheels.

First we prepare the helmet, remove the visor. Perhaps you, as in my case, will have to adjust the shape of the site. This can be seen in the photo, everything is individual here. I adjusted with a dremel with an emery nozzle.

I glued joint to joint on the chin of the helmet as exactly as possible two pieces of wide stationery tape. This is necessary so that if the food film breaks, poxypol does not spoil the helmet. Next, I pulled a cling film over the desired area with a margin, secured it with narrow masking tape. It is needed in order to form a blank on it, and then separate it from the helmet without any problems (unlike foreign resources, where it is difficult to cut the blank from the adhesive tape with a fishing line). I did the same with the platform: first, overlapping the stationery tape (so that the mass does not flow into the holes), then smoothly wrapped it with cling film.
After that, before starting to mix the poxypol, I warmed it up well under a stream of warm water so that the mass was softer. According to the instructions, I kneaded to a uniform plasticine-like mass. In this case, the most important thing is to mix very carefully, I remembered how I sculpted from plasticine in kindergarten :)
It is important to knead strongly so that bubbles do not form inside as in aerated chocolate (I often saw this in other articles). Then after praying, he put the softened lump of mass in the desired place, smeared it on the surface, put the pad on top and pressed it hard so that the poxypol took the shape of the future product. The excess can be carefully cut off with a knife and discarded.

It is recommended to wait half an hour before separating the workpiece from the helmet - and did so. I just peel off the cling film from the helmet and from the pad, remove it from the helmet, then gently peel it off on both sides. My detail turned out to be very thin, like expensive porcelain, it shone through the light. After that, I attached it again to make sure that the future adapter did not deform the adapter.

I left it to dry overnight, the next morning I got a very hard workpiece, it feels like between ceramics or plastic. The time has come to remove all unnecessary with a drill ... A rather long and painstaking process, I did not take pictures, it turned out something like this:

Sorry for the fingers, the consequences of the climbing wall :)

After sanding with small indents, I glued the adapter and the pad with superglue, first sanding both surfaces well and wiping them with alcohol. After that, the final polishing of the “sandwich” is flush. You can paint the adapter by first masking the “sole” where the adhesive tape will be glued (it will stick noticeably worse on the painted surface). I don’t need painting, the adapter is light gray, to match the helmet.

Hello, the question has already arisen several times how to glue the adhesive platforms on the helmet, but it's very easy to do!

What we need:

Adhesive platform (preferably curved)
-Helmet
- Ear stick, cotton wool or cloth
- A little alcohol or vodka

Step 1

You need to choose a place for the platform. It can be glued to the front of the helmet, it can be glued to the side (in this case, you will need to use the L-shaped mount) of the helmet. I will glue on the front.

Depending on the chosen place on the helmet, you must choose a straight or curved platform. More often, a helmet needs curved ones. helmets are usually not square. Those. It is necessary that the platform is in maximum contact with the surface of the helmet. You need to look for such a place more often. the surface of the helmets is ribbed.

Step 2

Now the place where you are going to crate must be cleaned of grease and dirt. Soak a cotton ball in alcohol and wipe the area. Let dry.

Step 3

Now we take the platform, remove the protective film and apply one side to the helmet. This is necessary in order to understand whether you are gluing the mount evenly. If everything is even, then fully apply and press hard! The main thing is not the time of pressing, but the force (as in the instructions for super glue). Those. Hold for 20-30 seconds.

All is ready! You can use the mount after 24 hours!

GoPro action camera capable of capturing the smallest movement so she's perfect suitable for video shooting. Shooting enthusiasts popular format from the first person, they know that a high-quality camera mount is very important and opt for two types of mounts: mount on helmet and chest strap. Such fasteners provide freedom of movement, the best overview, and secure fixation. Using them, we get a clear, dynamic video that we can show off to our friends. And from the most successful frames to mount a whole film.

Helmet mounts are one of the most popular among ordinary cyclists, extreme thrill-seekers, bloggers and other GoPro camera owners. Therefore, today we will talk about these mounts, their types, installation methods.

Bindings must be chosen according to the helmet used, paying attention to the quality of the material, it should not cause a single drop of doubt. After all, we do not want to lose the camera in the forest or on a snowy slope.

So, let's begin :

Bicycle (ventilated ) helmet .

This helmet fits the GoPro mount perfectly, fixing action camera GoPro HERO through the vents. Thanks to a special gasket, the camera will not slip, and the vertical adjustment allows you to adjust the desired shooting angle.

motorcycle helmet .

If your helmet has a visor with holes, you can take advantage also a vented bicycle helmet mount. Fasten it through these holes as shown in the video.

Otherwise, attach the camera to the adhesive platform. So that the mount does not interfere with the opening of the windshield, it is worth attaching the camera to the side. The GoPro swivel mount allows you to rotate the camera 360˚ without removing it from the helmet, as well as shooting from the rear.

Sometimes the camera is installed on the top of the helmet, closer to the back of the head, focusing on the edge of the tilted protective glass. Use a J-Latch or a swivel mount to increase the distance from the platform to the camera and the helmet will not obstruct the view of the lens.

Helmets for snowboard, mountain skiing and other.

As with a motorcycle helmet, it is convenient to use an adhesive platform to mount a GoPro action camera, placing it in the following places:

The front is one of the best positions as the camera will hold tight even under the most extreme shooting conditions. Use extension, which is a special remote design, established to the platform. It will help you shoot yourself, while capturing everything that happens behind you in the frame.

On the top of the helmet - allows you to achieve a fairly stable picture, while changing the direction of the camera, makes it possible to shoot both in front of you and behind your back. By purchasing fasteners with a hinged base, you can change the angle in one motion, without difficulty getting an interesting video sequence.

On the side - the camera is easier to control, change the angle of inclination. Shooting can also be done in two directions.

BUT what about platforms ?

It is better to choose a mount from well-known manufacturers with 3m adhesive tape at the base. Helmets are rounded, so take your pick. High - quality , properly fixed platform , securely fixes the camera on the helmet , eliminating unnecessary vibration , making the picture clearer and video more enjoyable to watch . There is no doubt about the reliability of such fastening, the adhesive platform will hold even in water. After all, manufacturing companies, such as GoPro, test the durability of the accessory, testing it at speeds of more than 300 km / h.

Before fixing the platform, choose the most suitable place for maximum fastener base contact with the surface of the helmet. Given that helmets are often ribbed, the ideal mounting location may need to be sought. If there is a suitable surface only on the back of the head, where it is completely useless to mount an action camera, choose a place based on the best camera angle, and go around the terrain by cutting off the interfering parts of the platform's adhesive base. So the grip on the surface of the helmet will be better. When using adhesive pads , be sure to follow the manufacturer 's recommendations . Before installing the platform, carefully clean the surface of the helmet from existing dirt, use a cotton pad or a soft cloth moistened with alcohol-containing solution. Do not use strong solvents, they may damage the helmet's paintwork. You'll get unsurpassed fixing, if the installation site is clean, dry, free of grease.

After the selected area on the helmet is clean and dry , take the platform , remove the film , press firmly but gently . Please note, the main thing is not time contact, and pressing force, 30 seconds will be quite enough. At the same time, make sure that the platform evenly adjoins the surface of the helmet from all sides.

After 24 hours, when the adhesive has completely set on the surface of the helmet, the mount can be used.

Useful advice :

Purchase one consisting of self-adhesive pads and safety straps. If the camera for some reason falls off the mount, an additional lock will hold it. The safety base, like the platform, should be taken only on 3m adhesive tape at the base, and when placing it, select the optimal distance, making sure that you have enough length of the safety cable.

We see that you are a real extreme person who does not forget about safety and always uses a protective helmet - you are a great fellow. But why not use your helmet with your GoPro action camera?! - But let's figure out which mount is suitable for your sport, as well as the type of helmet and, most importantly, where to attach such a mount.

What are they made of and how strong are they?

Let's start getting acquainted with our "heroes", because you need to understand what loads they can withstand:

If you want to be the center of attention
For everyone who loves everything unusual and positive, we offer a rotary helmet mount. Which is glued to standard adhesive pads and has a free-wheeling rotary joint, and a two-part composite section is inserted into a special clamp, one or more cameras are attached to the end of each of them. You can also use one camera with one section.

This is truly the most unusual of all GoPro action camera mounts and can be used in any field as it allows you to capture yourself in full height with all your surroundings.

Gluing rules
If you decide to glue your camera to the helmet, then take your time. First read this small set of rules:

  • The surface must be perfectly clean and degreased.
  • The surface of the platform must be in full contact with the surface of the helmet (sometimes you need to apply force)
  • The platform must be glued to the plastic part, and not to protective covers made of fabric or other material
  • Bonding should only be done when plus temperature and in the absence of high humidity and dust
  • After contact, hold the pad with force for about 2-3 minutes so that the glue has time to "grab"

Many glue their platforms on a dusty and not cleaned helmet, which leads to a loose fit of the adhesive bases to the surface of the helmet - the connection is not reliable enough and the platform with the camera can fall off at the most inopportune moment.

How to remove the adhesive pad from a helmet
Often there is a need for helmet painting, disassembly or other actions that involve the removal of any excess parts.

Therefore, if you have such a need, then, of course, you can “tear off” the pad by force, but in this case you can damage the surface of the helmet, the pad itself, and also parts of the adhesive tape will remain on the surface of the helmet, which are extremely difficult to remove.

We have a simple and effective tip that applies when gluing: you again need to take your home hair dryer and direct a stream of warm air to the area where the pad is glued, support it for about 2-3 minutes and then try to remove it.

The fact is that the flow of warm air heats up the glue and it loses its tenacity at this moment. In this way, you will remove your site more quickly and safely. Only perform such work in a ventilated area.

Attach suction cup to helmet
Many users of GoPro action cameras find it quite convenient to use with their helmet. But we do not recommend that you do this, as the shape of the helmet is often too streamlined and the "suction cup" may not be well fixed and fall off at the most inopportune moment. Also, with this type of attachment, you will have too much extra weight, which will negatively affect your cervical vertebrae.

White rubber band included
Each one had such a white rubber plug in the kit - it will also come in handy for us. Its task is to expand the "antennae" of the latch-mount and prevent the latch from flying out of the adhesive pad. Just insert it into the slots of the latch and put the ring on the mounting screw.

Additional insurance
Situations are different and no one can guarantee that your GoPro action camera will not fall off the main mount. But for such cases, there is a special one that can be conveniently glued near the main mount and tied around the protective box of your camera. This way, if the main mount falls off, the safety pad will be able to hold your GoPro and you won't lose it.

General conclusions
When choosing your helmet mount, we recommend that you ask yourself the following questions:

  • What type is your helmet?
  • Under what conditions do you use your helmet camera?
  • At what speeds do you usually travel and is aerodynamics important to you?
  • Do you move through rough terrain, forests and bushes with branches blocking your way?
  • What angle would you like to get and do you need to constantly adjust the angle and shooting direction of your GoPro?

Of course, if you have a protective helmet, then you should definitely try attaching your GoPro action camera to it.
